Founded in 1932 by George G. Blaisdell in Bradford, Pennsylvania, Zippo introduced its first lighter in 1933. Inspired by an Austrian lighter design, Blaisdell improved it with a rectangular case and a hinged lid, making it windproof and easy to use with one hand. The early Zippos were made of brass and featured a distinctive click when opened or closed. By the late 1930s, Zippo began customizing lighters for companies and organizations, setting the stage for their role as collectibles and promotional items.
