1946-1949 Boxes


1946 Red Windy Box. The box featured a bold depiction of Windy, which some contemporary observers deemed explicit or overly suggestive for the time. Due to the design's controversial nature, the box was swiftly removed from shelves, making it a rare collector's item today.

1946 Red Flag Box. The Red Flag box, characterized by its simplicity and lack of design, was a neutral packaging solution after the Red Windy box was removed from the shelves due to its controversial design. The Red Flag box was a temporary measure, swiftly superseded by the more refined 1947 box design (featured below). The 1947 design marked a return to more traditional and acceptable branding, aligning with the post-war era's sensibilities.

Base of the 1946 Red Flag box. Zippo is known to clear out their old stocks before using new stocks. It is not surprising to find a 1947 Red Box lid coupling with a 1946 base. Usually lighters which are housed in such bases with 1947-1949 lids are manufactured in 1947.

Rare 1948 X'mas Red Box. These Box Lids are rare as they were only released during the X'mas season in 1948. It is just a Merry X'mas greeting sticker stuck onto a 1947-1949 box lid.
