1983 Pipe Prototype
A highly unusual early Zippo Pipe Lighter featuring an experimental folding support mechanism. Dated 1983, this example was produced only one year after Zippo introduced its first dedicated pipe lighter in 1982.

While the standard Zippo pipe lighter relied on a specially designed chimney to allow the flame to be drawn downward into a pipe bowl, this exceptional example takes the concept further with a unique articulated metal support stand. When deployed, the mechanism supports the lighter in its open position, allowing it to remain elevated at an angle.

The additional support is not found on conventional production Zippo pipe lighters and gives this piece a distinctly experimental character. Its complex construction, additional moving components and unusual hinge-area mechanism suggest an attempt to explore a more versatile, hands-free method of using the pipe lighter.

The significance of this piece lies not only in its rarity, but also in its date. Produced during the very early years of Zippo's pipe lighter development, it represents an intriguing example of experimentation at a time when Zippo was beginning to expand beyond the traditional windproof lighter and develop alternative inserts and flame configurations.

A fascinating and highly unusual survivor from the early evolution of the Zippo Pipe Lighter, offering a rare glimpse into an experimental design that never became part of the standard production model.
