Regular Cobra Insert
This insert represents one of the rarest and most intriguing experimental designs in Zippo history. Produced in 1955, it is a full-sized insert fitted with the distinctive "cobra" spark guard, a feature more commonly associated with the early Slim inserts introduced during the same period.
The primary purpose of the cobra guard was to deflect heat away from the oversized flint wheel, which was positioned very close to the wick and could become excessively hot during use. To achieve this, Zippo engineered a unique one-piece assembly in which a single metal strip formed both the cam spring and the protective flint wheel guard. However, while the design effectively shielded the flint wheel from heat, the cobra head itself partially obstructed the sparks generated by the flint wheel, reducing the efficiency of spark delivery to the wick. In addition, manufacturing variations often resulted in inconsistent ignition performance.
To overcome these shortcomings, Zippo subsequently abandoned the cobra guard design and relocated the flint wheel farther away from the wick, eliminating the need for the heat shield while also allowing for more direct and reliable spark transfer. As a result, the cobra insert was phased out in 1956 in favor of the conventional open-wheel arrangement that would become standard on subsequent models.
Unlike the Slim models, where cobra guards can occasionally be found, full-sized cobra guard inserts are exceptionally scarce. Only a very limited number are believed to have been produced, likely as prototypes or pre-production evaluation pieces. Their short production life and poor survival rate have made them highly sought after by advanced Zippo collectors today.
This example is a fascinating glimpse into Zippo's willingness to experiment with new engineering ideas during the 1950s. Although the design ultimately failed commercially, it remains an important transitional piece that illustrates the company's continual pursuit of innovation and improvement in lighter performance.
