Seaboard Surety Company

This 1948 Zippo is an exceptionally unusual post-war advertising piece featuring a reverse-engraved Seaboard Surety Company logo, a decorative technique rarely encountered on Zippos produced after the 1930s. The circular emblem depicts a fully rigged sailing ship surrounded by the company name, creating a striking contrast against the brushed chrome surface.

Founded in the early 20th century, Seaboard Surety Company was a prominent American surety and insurance firm specializing in performance bonds, contract bonds, and other forms of financial guarantee services. The company became particularly well known within the construction, engineering, and public works industries, where surety bonds were essential for major projects. By the 1940s, Seaboard Surety had established itself as a respected national insurer with offices across the United States.

What makes this Zippo especially significant is its reverse-engraved decoration. This method, more commonly associated with Zippos of the late 1930s, involved selectively removing portions of the chrome finish to leave the artwork recessed and visually distinct from the surrounding surface. By 1948, however, such decoration had largely been replaced by conventional machine engraving and etching, making post-war examples produced in this style exceptionally scarce.

The lighter itself is a desirable 1948 three-barrel-hinge Zippo, manufactured during the early post-war years when Zippo was transitioning fully back to peacetime production. The clean brushed chrome finish provides an elegant backdrop for the Seaboard Surety emblem, giving the lighter a refined corporate presentation typical of high-quality executive advertising pieces of the era.

Whether commissioned for company executives, clients, or business associates, this lighter represents an uncommon blend of pre-war decorative craftsmanship and post-war corporate advertising. Its combination of a 1948 production date, three-barrel hinge construction, and the rarely seen reverse-engraved Seaboard Surety Company logo makes it a highly desirable and seldom-encountered piece for advanced Zippo collectors.
